Wow! What a great article! These are my thoughts exactly!! But I never quite knew how to put them down in words. I have been taking several classes lately, not for the exercise, but to observe the instructors, as well as the other students. There are certainly severl different "styles" of teaching. Some are just not enjoyable at all!! I am going to the AFAA workshop this weekend, and hope to pass the tests. Then I want to become an excellent instructor! It is possible to take the class to that place where they are immersed, and have a great experience!

I am REALLY enjoying your comments, as I am completely new to this industy. I want to know how large the book is that is sent to you after registration? There is a class available in my area two, three and four weeks away. So, didn't know if the two week class would give me enough time to read the entire book, or if I should take a later class.

To my knowledge, it is okay to take the workshop without the CPR cert. I believe that they simply withhold your certification until you mail or fax a copy of your CPR card to them. I left my CPR card at home the day of the workshop, and all that was required was a quick faxing when I got home to get them to mail the cert to me. Hope that helps! Glad you're here.

Thank you so much for this blog! I am taking the Primary Group Fitness Certification this weekend, but I don't have my CPR certification yet. I am registered for a CPR class in a couple of weeks (I couldn't get in any earlier). Do you know how I will prove that certification to AFAA when I do receive it in a couple of weeks and what should I expect during the workshop...do you think that will be a problem with AFAA since I don't have it yet?

I think that the practice questions are useful if you have a hard time retaining information or are afraid that you will not have time to read the book and work through the Study Guide. In other words, they are probably a nice-to-have shortcut for preparing for the test. However, you are going to be provided the test information throughout the workshop, so it really isn't necessary. Again, it's an investment I would make only if I didn't think I was getting enough from the book and study guide. Hope that helps!

Hi- I am planning to sign up for the group exercise certification and I am wondering how important you think it is to pay the extra money for the practice test questions. I am pretty good written test taker, and I really don't want to spend the extra money unless absolutely necessary. I really appreciate the thoroughness of your blog. Thank you in advance.

Honestly, I have no idea whether or not they will prevent you from listening in. I would plan to arrive early on the chance that you can get in. Worst case scenario is they say "no" and you are left with all the time you need to rehearse!

Yes, the retest fee is a bit steep in my opinion too, but unfortunately you either forfeit all of the money you invested up front or fork the fee over. Best of luck!

Thanks for your quick response. I was hoping to sit through the practical part of the review but today I was told that I am only to show up for the test. I live about 1.5 hours away and was planning to get there early but I don't want to wait until 2pm, do you think they would kick me out if I show up a bit before the practical retake? I didn't realize the fee is another $85.00!
